What Can A US Citizen do that a Resident Cannot?

US citizens have the right to both:

  1. Vote in a Federal Election and
  2. Run for federal office

Of course, you can’t necessarily run for president if you’re the Austrian Oak (Arnold Schwarzenegger), but you can certainly be part of the Senate and House game if you have been a citizen for long enough. You have to be a citizen for nine years before running for Senator for example.

What do you need to be a US Citizen to Do?

There are many rights and responsibilities as a citizen in a democratic country, for example you need to remain informed and vote. The immigration test is centered around these two answers though, which differentiate between the responsibilities of a citizen and those of a resident.

A US Citizen should / can:

  1. Serve on a jury
  2. Vote in a federal election

As the Federal courts site says, jury service is one of the most important civic duties you can perform.
